Pre-Pregnancy Planning
Although we have been zealous in efforts to control risks during pregnancy, very little effort has been made to change the course of pregnancy with pre-pregnancy interventions. Several issues should be considered and appropriate measures should be taken.
- If you are planning a pregnancy, you should be certain you have antibodies to the rubella virus. The rubella virus is also known as the “three-day measles” or “German measles.” If you have not been checked, a simple blood test will tell you if you are immune or should receive the immunization. This immunization should be administered at least one month prior to you planning conception. www.cdc.gov
- If you are planning a pregnancy, you should be immunized against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) with a single vaccine “Tdap.” If you find that you are pregnant, this vaccine may be administered in the hospital after delivery and prior to your discharge home. Anyone who will be around a child less than a year old should be vaccinated at least a month prior to being with the child to protect the child. www.cdc.gov
- You should avoid consumption of all alcoholic beverages and stimulants or sedative drugs.
- If your occupation brings you into contact with unusual chemicals or vapors, this should be investigated prior to conception.
- Recent evidence suggests that supplementing a patient’s diet with vitamins high in folic acid decreases the risk of some types of congenital defects. To be effective, supplementation must begin prior to conception. Please tell us if you are planning a pregnancy so that we may provide you with a prescription for this supplementation.
- If there are inherited genetic diseases within your family, you may wish to have a prenatal consultation with a genetic counselor.
